Sunset Strip "His Place" and the late 60's
In 1967 I went to a 'love In' at Griffith Park in Hollywood to share Jesus. Dressed in a suite and tie I looked totally out of place. I was sharing with one young man and he said why don't you get up on stage and tell them what you are telling me about Jesus. I soon stood on the stage in front of ten to fifteen thousand kids and spoke about Jesus. I ask whoever wanted to know more of Jesus to join me under a certain tree that I pointed to. About a hundred young people came over to hear about Jesus. That changed my life. Jesus then called me to move to Hollywood and just walk the streets sharing Jesus. I canceled most of my church meeting and went to the streets. Soon I was preaching in the nightclubs, and on stage at rock festivals, going to the gangs, and ministering to all the people groups on the Strip. We started a Jesus nightclub or coffee house called 'His Place' in early 1968. Jesus called me to make a cross and hang it on the wall of the building. Over the next years we move four times facing battles with the law and club owners. We did short crosswalks along Sunset every few weeks. Yet Jesus prevailed and a mighty Jesus awaking took place on the streets. It later became know as the Jesus Movement. I left on Christmas Day 1969 to carry the cross across America. This helped spread the Jesus Movement across the nation from L A to D C. Here is a brief look at some of that taking place in the photos below.
Above, Arthur chained himself to the cross on the Strip and fasted 28 days and nights after being evicted from 'His Place' in 1969. He fasted until he got a new building on the Strip. His Place just moved to the streets and the movement exploded as thousands came to Jesus.
Bill Gazzarri, known as the Godfather of Rock and Roll, ran a club on the Strip where Arthur preached many times during the late 60's and early 70's.
At the West Palm Beach Rock Festival Arthur preached several time. Appearing at the concert were such groups as The Rolling Stones Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Grand Funk Railroad, Pacific Gas and Electric, Johnny Winters, Sweetwater and many others. Arthur minister behind stage to most of the groups.
In 1968 Arthur spoke to 22,000 teenagers at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. (Right)
This was a real move of Jesus as young people came to Jesus and we sent them back to be witnesses to the people they had been with. This created a massive impact. The Jesus Movement started with Jesus 2,000 years ago and is it never ended and never will. Glory! I may be one of the few remaining from the Hippie times and Jesus Movement that has never left the streets but went to the streets on roads of the world with the cross and the message of Jesus. In 2011 I am still going...to the needy and lost and carrying the cross on the roads in special places, on TV and in a movie "The Cross" that all started back on the Sunset Strip. Jesus did it. All Glory to God.
